The best review of baby carriers phil&teds Escape
Okay just look at the camera. This is James with, we’re back again with another real baby carrier review. Now today we’re looking at the Phil & Ted’s Hiking Carrier.
And we’re going to attempt to get this little guy inside. He is now blocking the shot of the carrier. So, the reason why we want to give this one a go is it’s the lightest hiker carrier on the market. Which when you’re trying to haul around cargo and the size of this guy every little bit helps.
So the frame the whole thing, it only weighs 4.4 pounds. Now he would be 40 pounds or so, in fact I’m going to be surprised if he even fits in this thing but we’re going to give it a go. Are you going to get in this thing mate, yeah? We’re gonna try anyway.
Alright, are you going to walk?
Okay, you can go for a walk, and then we’ll try and get you in after. So as you can see, at the back here, we’ve got the active ergo fit system. It’s about the padded shoulder pads that are all fully adjustable, as well as the white strap, that clips in there to give that support around your waist.
Now what’s interesting about this one, apart from the aerated cutting features you’ve got there, is you can unzip it in the middle, okay? And you can move the height up and down to suit the length of your torso. Okay, we’ll keep that strapped up for now.
As we look at the back here, given it’s so lightweight, we don’t have as much storage space as what we’ve seen with some of the other hiking carriers that we’ve looked at. Still a reasonable amount of space in there.
But as you look at the back here, we’ve got this extra space here, which is somewhat deceiving in terms of what it does. You zip all the way to the end that unflips there and there you go. Extra backpack. Do you want to put it on?
Alright, arms in, okay, cool.
I need to go there.
Okay, you can go there. You can help out, now daddy doesn’t have to carry everything. Yeah, so as you can see, that also gives you the freedom of if you are just storing all your stuff in here, you got that extra wiggle room, okay?
You can really pad that out and it increases the storage space quite significantly. So if you really wanted to, you could just leave the backpack at home and take this out for the day. Again, keeps the weight to an absolute bare minimum.
Okay, We’ve been forced indoors for a little bit of refuge, so I can show you some more details about the carrier. As we take a look inside, you can see we’ve got this strap, which comes down over the top of your little one and clips to the support that sits under their backside down the bottom.
Okay, so that creates a nice secure environment, a lot of really good support there that sort of hovers above the frame area. And you’ve got this nice soft material, which they can chew on, they can draw on, whatever they like. Okay, so on the side you can see that that opens right up.
So rather than having to do the whole pick them up, hope they tuck their legs and type of move to get them in there. You can open this up like a door. They put one leg over, straight in there, close that up and they’re quite secure. So I really liked that feature about this carrier. As we look on the sides, we’ve got a couple of drink bottle holders, right there.
Very simple, but very convenient, okay? Not sure if the little one could quite reach around there, but still you’re hiking. So keeping fluids at arm’s length is always handy. Then as we look on this site, we’ve got an extra little handy pocket there. So for your phone, wallet, keys. Okay, and as we look at the back here, I just want to point out something that we…
If I can get the right zipper. So on this site, very important as you take this off, flip it the right way up. You might’ve noticed I was carrying that around upside down. But as you can see, a very cool little day pack to take with you. Now, while we’ve got this all separated.
There you go, mate, you can play with that. The kickstand that comes out, as you can see gives you a fairly steady base. Once that’s got pressure on it, it’s really quite steady. This is a very flat surface. And obviously that wind is gone. In the wind, it was blowing around a little bit.
So look, I’d be careful if you weren’t on a flat surface, it doesn’t quite have the same leverage or the same width in terms of that stable base is what some of the other carriers that we’ve looked at do have.
So, but still does the trick there, okay. Unfortunately, he’s too big, Unfortunately, he’s not slowing down his grown soon. So just for the sake of demonstrating we’re still going to get him in here, I wouldn’t necessarily carry him around all day.
All right mate lets get in. There you go, there you go. All right. So we’ve got him in there, it isn’t his size. He’s still nice and secure so we can lift this up. Without too much, too many problems. All right, and we’re gonna try and put him on. You’re alright? Ready? Okay

Besides the baby, how much backpacking gear can this hold?
Answer: It has quite a bit of storage, I have not used it for an overnighter or packed it way down, but I have put jackets and water bottles, toys, and diapers in mine and it works great. Has an open pouch area on the bottom that holds quite a bit. Water bottle holders on the side and a good size backpack on the back.
