The best Britax car seat is FAA-approved for Air Traveling

May 26, 2023 5:24 am
  • Britax Allegiance 3 Stage Convertible Car Seat
    10
Britax Allegiance 3 Stage Convertible Car Seat
    • Features: 3 modes of use, 10-position harness, 2-position buckle, Side Impact Protection, SafeCell Impact Protection, easy-off cover for cleaning
    • Price at time of publish: $199
    • I've been using the Britax Allegiance 3 Stage Convertible Car Seat for my little one and it's been a joyride! Not only is it affordable, but it also comes loaded with some excellent features that offer enhanced safety and convenience. What caught my attention is its 3-in-1 convertible feature, which allows it to grow with my child from infancy to toddlerhood.
    • This car seat is designed to accommodate my child in a rear-facing position until they reach 40 pounds and in a forward-facing position up to 65 pounds, which is pretty commendable. The 10-position harness and 2-position buckle make for an easy, no-rethread adjustment which has been a lifesaver during our growth spurts.
    • The seat’s Side Impact Protection is an absolute standout, providing a deep, foam-lined shell to shield my child. Additionally, SafeCell Impact Protection is an integrated system of safety components that work together to protect my child well beyond the federal safety standards. The easy-off cover makes cleaning the car seat hassle-free, which is another big plus for me.
    PROS
    • The car seat is praised for its safety features and secure installation, providing peace of mind for parents.
    • The thick and soft padding of the seat ensures comfort for their child.
    • The ease of adjusting the straps makes it simple to secure and loosen as needed.
    • The car seat has recline function, allowing for a comfortable position for rear-facing.
    • The installation process was straightforward and easy, although some mentioned a learning curve with certain aspects.
    • The car seat's narrow design is appreciated by parents who need to fit multiple seats in their vehicles.
    • The car seat is considered a good value, providing safety and functionality at a reasonable price.
    CONS
    • The absence of cup holders can be inconvenient for keeping drinks or snacks.
    • The strap design and velcro attachments on the Britax Allegiance may be uncomfortable or unnecessary.
    • Challenges in obtaining a tight fit when securing their child in the car seat can appear.

Best Infant Travel Car Seat

May 26, 2023 5:24 am
  • Evenflo LiteMax DLX Infant Car Seat
    9
Evenflo LiteMax DLX Infant Car Seat
    • Features: Rear-facing only, 4-35lbs weight limit, full coverage canopy, ergonomic handle, easy-to-install base, machine-washable padding
    • Price at time of publish: $169
    • Having used the Evenflo LiteMax DLX Infant Car Seat, I can confidently say it's a top-notch choice for parents looking for a reliable infant car seat. Its rear-facing design ensures optimal safety for newborns and infants, supporting children from 4 to 35 pounds.
    • What I particularly appreciate about this car seat is the full coverage canopy – it's just great for protecting my little one from harsh weather conditions and bright sunlight. The ergonomic handle is another feature that's made my life a lot easier. It's designed for a more comfortable carry, which is a blessing when you're moving the car seat between the car and the house or around town.
    • The installation process is straightforward with the easy-to-install base, and the machine-washable padding is a bonus for those inevitable spills and messes. In my experience, the Evenflo LiteMax DLX Infant Car Seat is a great mix of safety, convenience, and affordability.
    PROS
    • The car seat is reasonably priced, making it a budget-friendly option.
    • The car seat comes with a base, eliminating the need for a separate purchase.
    • It can be attached to the Evenflo Reversi Lightweight Stroller, providing versatility and ease of use.
    • The load-bearing leg extension adds an extra layer of safety to the car seat, extending its lifespan and potentially saving on additional purchases.
    • The seat is comfortable and made of soft material, providing a cozy environment for the baby.
    • The car seat has an appealing design, with features like a pink canopy against a light grey seat.
    CONS
    • The car seat may feel cheap compared to other options they have used before.
    • The straps can be challenging to tighten on smaller babies, which can be inconvenient and time-consuming.
    • The car seat can not click easily into the base and requires extra effort to ensure proper attachment.
    • The car seat, particularly with the base, maybe too long for compact cars, necessitating adjustments to the front seats and potentially compromising passenger comfort.

The best car seat for flying (FAA-approved)

  • Diono Radian 3RXT Convertible Car Seat
    8
Diono Radian 3RXT Convertible Car Seat
    • Features: 3 modes of use, 12-position adjustable headrest, steel alloy frame, reinforced sidewalls, extended rear-facing use, FAA-approved for air travel
    • Price at time of publish: $299
    • As a parent who's used the Diono Radian 3RXT Convertible Car Seat, I can tell you it's been a game-changer. This seat boasts 3 modes of use, accommodating my child from their early months to their elementary school years. It's designed to keep children rear-facing from 5 to 50 pounds, and forward-facing from 22 to 65 pounds, and then converts into a booster seat for children up to 120 pounds.
    • What's impressive about this seat is its solid steel alloy frame and reinforced sidewalls, providing excellent safety and peace of mind. The 12-position adjustable headrest allows the seat to grow with my child, ensuring their comfort at every stage.
    • One of my favorite things about the Radian 3RXT is that it's FAA-approved for air travel. As a family who loves to travel, this feature has been invaluable. We've been able to carry our seats on board and ensure our child's safety and comfort during flights.
    PROS
    • The car seat has a high level of security, feeling confident in the safety it provides.
    • The Diono Radian 3RXT is easy to install, even compared to other car seat brands they have used.
    • The car seat has a robust build quality and the ability to withstand accidents. It is durable in car accidents.
    • The car seat is designed to last for up to ten years, providing value for money and convenience.
    • The Diono Radian 3RXT is praised for its compact size, making it suitable for fitting in various car models.
    • Compatible for installation in different car models.
    CONS
    • The fabric quality of the newer models is worse: it feels thinner, has less padding, and may not hold up well after washing.
    • The car seat is challenging to clean once it gets dirty, which can be a drawback in maintaining its appearance.
    • The Diono Radian 3RXT may seem difficult to install, especially when switching between vehicles or for regular adjustments.
    • The straps can pinche children's necks, so the seat is generally less comfortable compared to previous models.

It serves as a rear-facing car seat for infants, a forward-facing seat as they grow, and finally transforms into a highback booster for my older child. The 10-position adjustable headrest is a breeze to adjust, and it ensures the seat can accommodate my child's growth spurts.

    CONS
    • The harness buckle can be challenging to undo, requiring extra effort.
    • The car seat may seem heavy, which can be a consideration for carrying or transferring it between vehicles.
    • When installed in specific configurations, such as rear-facing or forward-facing with the dial in a certain spot, the car seat occupied a significant amount of space in the foot area or hindered legroom for the child.

FAQ about Travel Car Seats

Types of car seats for travel

There are two main types of car seats that are approved for air travel: infant car seats and convertible car seats.

Infant car seats are only for babies who weigh less than 22 pounds and are less than 29 inches long. These car seats have a handle so that they can be easily carried, and they can be attached to a stroller. Some models even have a base that can stay in the car, so you don’t have to lug the whole seat with you through the airport.

Convertible car seats can be used for children who weigh between 20 and 65 pounds (depending on the model). These seats can be installed in either the front- or back-facing position. Convertible car seats are not as convenient to carry as infant car seats, but they can be used for a longer period of time.

What are FAA-approved car seats and why are they important for parents with young children?

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved certain car seats for use on airplanes. These seats have been tested to make sure that they are safe for use in an aircraft.

It’s important to note that not all car seats are FAA-approved, so it’s important to check before you travel. Additionally, even if a car seat is FAA-approved, the airline may have its own restrictions on which types of car seats can be used. Be sure to check with your airline before you travel.

The benefits of using an FAA-approved car seat while traveling with young children

There are several benefits to using an FAA-approved car seat while traveling by airplane:

  • Safety. FAA-approved car seats have been tested to make sure that they are safe for use in an aircraft. This means that your child will be properly restrained during turbulence or if the plane experiences any other type of emergency.
  • Convenience. FAA-approved car seats can be easily installed in an aircraft seat. This means that you won’t have to hold your child on your lap during the flight.
  • Comfort. Your child is likely to be more comfortable in their own car seat during a long flight.

Tips for properly using an FAA-approved car seat during travel

  1.  Make sure that the car seat is properly installed in the aircraft seat. The car seat should be attached to the airplane seat with the lap belt and shoulder harness.
  2. Make sure that your child is properly secured in the car seat. The harness straps should be snug, and the chest clip should be fastened at the armpit level.
  3. Do not use any aftermarket products with the car seat. This includes car seat covers, cushions, or toys. These products have not been tested with the car seat and could interfere with its performance.

How We Tested

Before you take off, it’s important to make sure that your car seat is FAA-approved and meets all safety standards.

Here’s how we tested our car seat for flying:

  • First, we checked the bottom of the car seat for red text indicating whether it was approved for air travel.
  • We also looked up the specific airline’s rules and regulations regarding car seats and made sure that our car seats fit within their requirements.
  • Next, we inspected the car seat for any signs of damage or wear and tear that could compromise its safety.
  • We also made sure that all straps were securely fastened and that there were no loose parts or pieces.
  • Finally, we placed the car seat in a protective bag before checking it at the airport. This helps protect the car seat from any potential damage during transit.
  • By following these steps, you can ensure that your child’s car seat is safe and secure when you fly!

Comparing the Safety

When it comes to car seats, safety is the primary concern for parents.

When embarking on air travel, it’s essential to ensure that your car seat has FAA approval for use on airplanes.

The Britax Allegiance 3 Stage Convertible Car Seat, Evenflo LiteMax DLX Infant Car Seat, and Diono Radian 3RXT Convertible Car Seat all offer different features that can enhance the safety of your child during car journeys.

Here’s a comparison of these three models:

The Britax Allegiance 3 Stage Convertible Car Seat is known for its robust safety features. It’s equipped with SafeCell Impact Protection, an integrated system of safety components including an impact-absorbing base, tether, and harness, an impact-stabilizing steel frame, and Complete Side Impact Protection. These features work together to minimize the force of a crash and protect your child. However, this model doesn’t have an NHTSA rating at the time of writing, which makes it difficult to objectively compare its safety with the others.

The Evenflo LiteMax DLX is a rear-facing-only car seat designed for newborns and infants. It doesn’t have advanced safety features like side impact protection, which is a downside when compared to the other models. However, it meets or exceeds all applicable federal safety standards and Evenflo’s side impact standard. Its overall NHTSA rating is 4.6, indicating a high level of safety performance.

The Diono Radian 3RXT Convertible Car Seat stands out with its steel alloy frame and reinforced sidewalls, providing excellent safety and peace of mind. It also offers extended rear-facing use, which is considered the safest position for young children. The seat is FAA-approved for air travel, which is a plus. Its overall NHTSA rating is 4.8, indicating superior safety performance.

All three car seats are designed with safety as a priority, but they each have their unique strengths. The Britax Allegiance stands out with its integrated SafeCell Impact Protection system but lacks an NHTSA rating. The Evenflo LiteMax DLX meets all federal safety standards but lacks advanced safety features. The Diono Radian 3RXT shines with its steel alloy frame, reinforced sidewalls, and highest NHTSA rating among the three, making it the best of the three in terms of safety features and ratings. However, the best choice will depend on your specific needs, preferences, and budget.

Lightweight and Portable Design

Parents often prioritize lightweight and portable designs in car seats to facilitate easy movement between vehicles and carrying. The following is an in-depth examination of the lightweight and portable design features of the Britax Allegiance 3 Stage Convertible Car Seat, Evenflo LiteMax DLX Infant Car Seat, and Diono Radian 3RXT Convertible Car Seat:

  1. The Britax Allegiance is a convertible car seat designed to transition from a rear-facing to a forward-facing seat. It’s a bit on the heavier side, weighing around 19.5 lbs, which may make it less convenient to move around regularly. It is, however, slim enough to fit three across in most vehicles. The seat does not come with a carrier handle, reducing its portability when out of the car.
  2. The Evenflo LiteMax DLX is the lightest among the three, weighing only around 16 lbs. This model is designed to be an infant carrier, featuring an ergonomic handle that makes it easier to carry. The LiteMax DLX is also compatible with most Evenflo strollers, allowing for a seamless transition from car to stroller.
  3. The Diono Radian 3RXT is heavier, weighing around 27 lbs, but its unique design allows it to fold flat for travel and storage, making it relatively portable for a seat of its kind. It also comes with a carrying strap for easier transportation. However, its weight might make it less convenient to move frequently between vehicles.

All three car seats offer different levels of portability. The Britax Allegiance, while not the lightest, is slim enough to fit three across in most vehicles. The Evenflo LiteMax DLX is the lightest and most portable, with an ergonomic handle and stroller compatibility. The Diono Radian 3RXT, despite being the heaviest, offers unique portability features like its foldable design and carrying strap. The best choice will depend on the specific needs of your family, including how often you plan to move the car seat, your vehicle size, and your budget.

Britax Allegiance 3 Stage Convertible Car Seat

The Britax Allegiance 3 Stage Convertible Car Seat is a top contender for the best travel car seats on the market. With its impressive safety features, easy installation process, and comfortable design, it offers peace of mind and convenience for parents on the go.

One of the standout features of this car seat is its emphasis on safety. Britax is known for its commitment to child safety, and the Allegiance doesn't disappoint. It incorporates the Britax SafeCell Impact Protection system, providing advanced side impact protection and a foam-lined shell for added security in case of a crash. Additionally, the car seat offers easy installation with push button latch connectors and built-in lock-offs, ensuring a secure fit every time.

Another highlight is the Allegiance's versatility. It is a 3-stage convertible car seat, accommodating children from rear-facing infancy (5-40 pounds) to forward-facing toddlerhood (20-65 pounds). The 10-position quick-adjust harness and headrest eliminate the need for rethreading, allowing the seat to grow with your child. The car seat also offers three recline positions and a comfortable foam padding to keep your little one cozy during travels.

While the Allegiance has received praise for its safety and versatility, some users have noted a learning curve during installation and adjustments. The seat's straps and recline positions may require a bit of familiarization, but once you get the hang of it, the Allegiance offers a secure and comfortable ride for your child. Overall, considering its safety features, convenience, and value for money, the Britax Allegiance 3 Stage Convertible Car Seat is a fantastic choice for parents in need of a reliable travel companion for their little ones.

The SlimFit3 has been approved by the FAA for use on aircraft in 5 different modes of the harness. It’s not suitable when installed facing forward or back, since it could come loose during flight and cause danger to both passengers and crew members alike!
